Dr. Peter McCallum – President
Pete McCallum is the current president of the Deer Creek Chorale. He and his wife, Carol, reside in Street, MD. Pete retired in June, 2011 from the Cecil County Public Schools after a 41-year career in public education the last 17 of which were as an Executive Director of Instruction. He serves on the Session at Highland Presbyterian Church, volunteers in the conservatory at Longwood Gardens, coordinates the McDaniel College graduate programs in Cecil County, gardens, travels, exercises, and studies guitar. Pete has 5 young grandchildren and loves being an important part of their lives. As a retiree, one of his primary goals is to make a positive impact on the community in which he lives.
Patrick Dickerson – Vice President
Patrick joins the Deer Creek Chorale for his second season, thrilled to keep serving local causes with his passion for music. Experience in nonprofit development led him to manage projects at historic houses, land trusts, nonprofit associations, and now the DCC. As Executive Director for Churches for Streets of Hope in Essex, he is an ambassador for the homeless on the east side of Baltimore County, where he works to make permanent housing available for the men who reside in the Streets of Hope emergency shelter. Outside of work, Patrick and his wife Emily live with their two cats (James Bond and Moneypenny) in Cockeysville, Maryland. He continues to practice on his collection of woodwinds from around the world and enjoys leading the worship team at Boulevard Christian Church.
Meredith Leroy – Secretary
Meredith Leroy is a Realtor with Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage and lives in Jarrettsville, MD with her husband, Alan. She is the current Secretary of the Deer Creek Chorale and has sung with them for three years. She is an active member of her church, Saint James Monkton, and enjoys reading, gardening, going to the beach and riding horses at her daughter’s farm.
Suzanne Zantop – Treasurer
Suzanne Zantop has been a small business owner and worked in the performing arts in Harford County for over 30 years. She was Artistic Director of the Harford Dance Theatre, Chair of the School Concerts Committee, and an actor in and director of numerous theatrical productions in the Baltimore area. With DCC, Suzanne sings with the Chamber Choir and serves as Treasurer.
Jennifer Hayes became a DCC chorister during the 2015-2016 season, and joined the DCC Board the following year. Previously she has served on the boards of One Voice Mixed Chorus-Minneapolis, New Wave Singers of Baltimore, and The Rainbow Chorale of Delaware. While on these boards, she served as secretary, president, section representative, personnel chair, and board delegate. Jennifer has earned two master’s degrees from the University of Minnesota in, one in science education and one in epidemiology. Since 2007, Jennifer has served as the senior epidemiologist in the Maryland Cancer Registry at the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
Sharon Kachur is the Assistant Supervisor of Mathematics for the Harford County Public Schools. In this role, Sharon is currently working with educators from across the country to implement the Common Core Standards for Mathematics and the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers mathematics tests. In her spare time, Sharon serves as president of the Maryland Council of Supervisors of Mathematics, teaches graduate courses, works with her daughter to sew dresses for Haitian orphans, and sings with the Deer Creek Chorale. Sharon and her family are active supporters of several non-profit community organizations including the Helping Up Mission in Baltimore, Miriam´s Kitchen in Washington, D.C. and the Haiti Mission at Emory United Methodist Church.
Jeff Koerber is a supervisor at Towson University where he is charged with providing IT support for 22,000 students. He is a former student of Marty Banghart and is a charter member of the Deer Creek Chorale. He has also been a member of the Harford Choral Society, Maryland Conservatory Chorale, Bay Country Gentlemen and the St. Mary’s Church (Pylesville, MD) choir. Jeff serves as technical coordinator of the DCC organization.
Christine Martin Ph.D.
Christine Martin hails from northeastern Ohio where she was active in singing and musical theatre. After beginning college as a vocal performance major she switched to the physiological sciences (thinking she might possibly earn a living in that field). While teaching Anatomy & Physiology at Stark State College she was awarded the State of Ohio College Teacher of the Year. She is President Emeritus of the Human Anatomy & Physiology Society, an international association dedicated to college science teaching and pedagogy. Transplanted to Maryland in 2000 she continued as a Primary Care Educator at the University of MD Medical School until she began a private duty elder care company in 2006: Absolute Companion Care located in Monkton. She also sings in the Saint James Episcopal Church choir in Monkton.
Christine Master maintains that “All I have learned about singing has been in high school, college, church & community choirs.” This is her second year singing with DCC & she is thrilled to be a part of this organization. She also sings with First Presbyterian Church of Bel Air, Maryland. Her full time job is assisting Buyers & Sellers with their real estate needs in Harford & surrounding counties. She has been affiliated with RE/MAX American Dream for over ten years. Christine lives in the town of Bel Air with her “West Virginia Holler Hound”, Lucy & Gilly, her Humane Society rescue cat. She is treasurer of the Shreffler House, a local homeless shelter. Johns Hopkins Children Center is one of her favorite charities. She is also a philanthropist with the Women’s Giving Circle of Harford.
Alexis Morris joined the Deer Creek Chorale after graduating from Elizabethtown College in 2013. A former choir student of Marty Banghart’s, Alexis was eager to join such a close-knit community after returning home. She also serves on the DCC’s Marketing Committee. Currently, Alexis works in marketing for Saint Agnes Hospital in Baltimore. She is a member of the St. Paul United Methodist Church Choir (Pylesville, MD), and as a former college lacrosse player, she enjoys being active.
Liz Phelan is enjoying her second year as a Deer Creek Chorale chorister, after singing for seven years with the A Cappella Baltimore Vocal Jazz Ensemble. Liz served in the field of education as teacher and principal for 25 years before retiring in 2009. Since that time she has enjoyed traveling with her husband, caring for her three granddaughters, and doing some website design and desk-top publishing. She is excited to be a member of the DCC Board and serves as the DCC webmaster and newsletter editor. Liz has been happily married to husband, Dan, since 1979, and they have two wonderful children. Over the years they have been active volunteers in scouting and in their Cathedral of Mary Our Queen parish, and have become enthusiastic genealogists.
Advisory Board Members
Dr. Nelson Fritts, Jr.
Dr. Nelson Fritts Jr. has been in the field of Arts Education for the past 40 years. He served as Instructional Coordinator for Fine Arts for the Cecil County Public Schools until his retirement. His previous positions have included Fine Arts Supervisor for Allegany County, MD; Music Educator in the Anne Arundel County, MD; and Music Educator in the Hampshire County, WV school systems. As a conductor, Dr. Fritts has directed ensembles at every educational level from Pre- Twinkle Suzuki strings to university wind ensembles. He continues to serve as guest conductor and adjudicator in Maryland.
Jeff Gonya is a Trustee of the Friends School of Baltimore and serves on the Board of the Middle Grades Partnership. Mr. Gonya serves on the Board of Trustees of the Mpala Wildlife Foundation, Inc. and the Fund Management Committee of the ICDDR, B. He is also a member of the Baltimore Estate Planning Council. Mr. Gonya is a member of the Estates and Trusts Section Council of the Maryland State Bar Association. He holds degrees from the University of Virginia and is a law partner at Venable.
Gary Stokes has been an strategic planning adviser to the DCC Board since 2012. His daughter Allison, currently a student at Belmont University in Nashville, was a member of the Chorale, which originally introduced Gary to DCC. Gary joined the Board because he was excited about the opportunity to apply some of his experiences in the corporate world and in his current business, in which he works with owners of small businesses, to the challenge of expanding the reach of the DCC. In addition to his activities with the DCC, Gary served as President of the Board for The Arc Northern Chesapeake, as Vice President of the Bel Air Rotary Club, and consults on a pro-bono basis with another non-profit, the Harford Family House. He will continue singing in the shower in the hopes of one day singing with the DCC.
