9/27/2024 – Happy Friday and read on!!!

Dear Folks,

First off, thank you to all those who have sent notes today checking on our place in SAnibel. It was two years ago tomorrow that Ian hit and devastated the island and our house. The good news this time is that aside from a 3 to 5 foot storm surge and loss of power, Sanibel was spared. My prayers go out to all the folks who are being  heavily impacted by Helene. We can truly sympathize with what challenges await them.

Our second rehearsal rocked! Thank you for coming very well prepared, organized, and seemingly comfortable with the assigned material. We do have to work a lot on the finer things like diction, sense of line shape, precise rhythms, breath preparation, vowel uniformity, syllabic stress and the list goes on. It is all about taking the music off the page and communicating  the text in an emotional and stylistic way and of course the face and body energy help reflect that as well.  In your practice routine, please keep these things in mind and get in the habit of performing more than just notes and rhythms!

Now for rehearsal #3.

Warmups: Vol. V nos. 8-10; Vol. VI # 3, (write in solfege); If Ye Love Me, Hand in Hand (try memorized).

O Clap your Hands; start at page 8. Please number measures in pencil since they are not on this score. Will help with knowing we are.

Hands(Hagen); meas. 25-41. Sopranos doo and rest on da. Sing your individual parts like you are vocalizing. Will hear separately.

Hands are Knockin’; meas. 26-60. Say words over and over in rhythm. This will greatly enhance your confidence and accuracy.

Introduction to our commissioned piece. I am looking forward to learning this together and premiering it on November 24th. It will then be published by Carl Fischer.

Close out the evening with the Irish Blessing.
