1/24/2025 – Friday missive! It is warming up!
Dear friends,
I was so excited to start back on Tuesday and I hope everyone who came out in the cold and made the rehearsal happen felt it was worth it! We had 27 singers absent and I ask those folks to get the notes from someone in your section. We went through all the translations and background information about the pieces we are singing. It was incredibly heartwarming to hear those beautiful sounds and I cannot wait to explore our new repertoire. I think everyone will agree that Illuminare is simply beautiful.
I have been in contact with Elaine and invited her to our concert on May 10. She wrote back a beautiful note and said she would be here in a minute if it weren’t for her twins graduating from high school. I would say that that’s a good reason for not Coming to Maryland! But she is so excited that we are doing her piece and wants pictures and clips from the concerts. She also invited us to join her in June 2026 in Paris to perform her works. She is sending information about the trip and as we gather more info, Melissa will be sending out a survey as to how many would be interested.
Here is the schedule for Tuesday:
Introductions of new folks
Warm-ups: round #2 in all different formations, Spark and breath, Ride the Chariot, An die Musik
Finish Jubilate Deo. Say text in rhythm and circle meter changes. This needs to be spunky and full of joy!!!! Sheldon will conduct.
Finishing movements 1 and 5 of Illuminare. Notice the similarities of thematic material and also be aware of the unisons. The score is very well marked so adhere to the dynamic markings. Michael will be conducting this at both performances. Lucky me. I get to sing it!
Today I cohosted a conductor’s luncheon with Stephen Holmes held at the Maryland State Boys choir facility. It was a wonderful opportunity to meet new folks in the field and share ideas. Here is a picture.

And get your Kleenex out for this recording of Hymn to the Fallen. Follow along with your music or just watch and listen.
Have a lovely weekend and see you on Tuesday,
Marty
